Lately I've been coveting these prickly pear pin cushions that LoobyLu makes. I think they're just the cutest. Must.Have.Prickly.Pear. I wasn't going to shamelessly rip off her fantastic design (plus my embroidery super sucks), but I did need a new pin cushion. Actually, I needed the one I have cut in two.
I'm constantly running back and forth between the sewing machine and the ironing board and I knew it would be better to have a pin cushion in each place. I messed around with a couple of shapes yesterday. Equilateral triangles, half square triangles, circles, flowers, you name it. Ultimately I wanted something that would nest in my sewing drawer when not in use. With the remains of the flu still hovering in our house, I decided on simple 3" rounded squares. No fuss, no muss and under 30 minutes to make. Scrap denim on the bottom, stuffed with a few navy beans for weight and fiberfill for bulk. If I like them enough I may replace the innards with sand. That's the pin cushion filling standard in my house - it actually sharpens your pins as you go (at least that's what my mum always says.)
oh those pin cushions are sooo cool!

Oooh! Those are some neat pin cushions! My sewing machine took a flying leap and I haven't been able to sew ANYTHING. There's an outfit I cut out like 3 years ago I never finished(that's when I found out there was something wrong with the machine), then I got the fixings for that tote bag from Stitch N Bitch(and was promptly REreminded that the machine was kaput!) and can't making ANY of it. and I so desperately need a circ needle holder.. Oh well. maybe next year!

Very cute and wow, I love the pear ones you linked to! Did you just stuff with batting? I'd like to do some old-fashioned ones with sawdust in, wonder if Home Depot could set me up with some sawdust... hmm.
